Dr. Ariana Vigil is a Druscilla French Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.Dr. Vigil stands for justice and equality, for the rights of workers and the natural world, and for the rights of all people to live, grow and thrive free from discrimination, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and classism.Currently, the Women's and Gender Studies (or WGS) at UNC-Chapel Hill is interested in educating and inspiring the next generation of thinkers, researchers, advocates, and activists. Vigil says they have a robust offering of courses in Women’s and Gender Studies, including courses in Feminist Theory, Sexuality Studies, Gender and Spirituality, Gender and Pop Culture, and Latina Literature (to name just a few). They offer an undergraduate BA Major and Minor, a Minor in Sexuality Studies, and a Graduate Certificate in WGST.The WGS Department seeks to empower women and trans and non-binary folks through education - their courses and degrees help their students understand the role of gender, race, class, and sexuality in our individual lives and our greater world. Through interdisciplinary and intersectional study, Vigil says they hope to better understand people and the world to create necessary change.
