Meet the NC House of Representatives Member Deborah Butler
An attorney by trade, Deborah Butler has worked as an attorney in Wilmington, North Carolina, after graduating from Wake Forest Law School.
Butler was appointed to the NC House of Representatives for District 18 in 2017 by Governor Roy Cooper and has been re-elected since.
Butler has openly identified as a lesbian for decades and sits alongside 7 other state legislators apart from the LGBTQiA+ Community.
Butler is actively fighting against the Anti-Trans push that has been rising all over the US and takes time to meet with trans and gender-queer individuals in her community.
Even though the State Legislator is under a Republican stronghold, Butlers does all she can in session to advocate for Trans and Queer rights.
Butler notes that allies must remember that June is not the only month we must fight for LGBTQIA+ rights. The fight is ongoing all year long for queer individuals. We must not tolerate harmful rhetoric and fight diligently to protect the Queer community, especially Trans-Youth. For decades, fundamental human rights for Queer people have been politicized. Being Queer and wanting the right to exist equally as their straight or cis-gendered counterparts is not a political opinion. This is arguing for fundamental human rights for all sexualities and gender identities.
Whether in the LGBTQIA+ Community or not, you must fight this hate equally. Being an ally is more than voting, donating to organizations fighting human rights, or helping sign people up to vote. It is also addressing microaggressions in day-to-day life, speaking up for marginalized communities even if they are not facing the microaggressions directly. 👩💼
